31st Annual 20 de Mayo Gala

31st Annual 20 de Mayo GalaMonday, May 20, 6:30pm - JW Marriott Marquis Miami, 255 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Downtown Miami

The Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) and the Latin Builders Association (LBA), will co-host the 31st annual 20 de Mayo celebration on Monday, May 20th at 6:30pm. The guests of honor at this year’s celebration will be Berta Soler, leader of Cuba’s Sakharov Prize winning Ladies in White, as well as representatives for Cuban Sakharov Prize recipients Guillermo Fariñas and Oswaldo Payá.

After years of being denied an exit permit to travel abroad because of their activism in favor of human rights, dissident leaders from across Cuba, recipients of numerous awards, including the Andrei Sakharov European Parliament Award and the U.S. State Department’s Human Rights Defender Award among others, have briefly left Cuba to inform the world of the injustices that continue to cripple the Cuban people.

At the 20 de Mayo celebration, Ms. Soler will share the plight of the Ladies in White; mothers, daughters, and wives of political prisoners who for ten years have marched peacefully through the streets of Havana and other Cuban cities each Sunday seeking the release of their loved ones and respect for the human rights of the Cuban people. Representatives will also honor the legacy, dignity and courage of Mr. Paya and Mr. Fariñas as their respective nonviolent movements continue to lead the Cuban society towards freedom and democracy.
