2017 Miami Cochon555

2017 Miami Cochon555Sunday, March 26, 4pm-7:30pm – Ritz Carlton South Beach, 1 Lincoln Rd, Miami Beach

Cochon555, the hyper-local festival with a flair for innovation, returns to Miami with its Heritage BBQ edition on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach. The promotion of global food cultures and family farming will be the central themes of the day. From winemakers and distillers to barkeeps and chefs, dozens of the city’s biggest hospitality talents will be cooking – or creating drinks to match – Old World barbecue recipes cooked over live fires. To further champion the good food movement, a portion of all proceeds will go to Cochon555’s sister charity, Piggy Bank – a pig farming sanctuary.

Cochon555 is proud to announce the competing chefs for 2017 in Miami:
Chef Clark Bowen and Chef Rick Mace of db Bistro Moderne & Café Boulud Palm Beach – Contemporary French
Chef Tito Vargas of The Bazaar by José Andrés – Modern Spanish with a Twist
Chef Paula DaSilva of Artisan Beach House – Bold New American Cooking
Chef Jeremiah Bullfrog of gastroPod – Elevated Global Street Foods
Chef John Gallo and Rene Reyes of Pinch Kitchen – Freestyle American Cuisine

At the heart of all Cochon555 barbecue events lies a culinary competition to promote local family farming and global grilling traditions. The chefs are each given one whole, heritage-breed pig of 200 pounds and one week to prepare the whole animal. Each chef must present a “Judge’s Plate” of six dishes to a panel of 20 notable judges. The panel scores each plate based on utilization; global influences; cooking techniques; and overall flavor in order to select a winner, who will then be crowned the “BBQ Prince/Princess” of Miami. #COCHON555 @COCHON555 @PiggyBankOrg

Calle Ocho 2017

Calle Ocho 2017Sunday, March 12th, 10am-7pm, SW 8TH STREET (12TH – 27TH AVE), Miami

Kiwanis Club of Little Havana celebrated its 40th annual Calle Ocho Festival attracting more than 1 million attendees. Known as the largest Latino festival in the United States, this year’s flagship event featured live performances from Kings of Carnaval 2017, CNCO, Reykon, Willy Chirino, Albita, Jose Alberto “El Canario,” Milly Quezada, Piso 21, Chacal, Cosculluela, J Quilles and Carlos Oliva, as well as savory competitions like the first-ever El Croquetazo presented by Catalina and 3rd Annual Cuban Sandwich Smackdown. Marking the official end of a week’s worth of Carnaval Miami 2017 events, the marquis annual fundraiser of Kiwanis Club of Little Havana in support of the Kiwanis Little Havana Foundation’s youth development programs, Calle Ocho capped off the series in stunning fashion. The event brought together more than 1,250,000 attendees representing a myriad of Latin American countries.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary, a V.I.P. component was introduced to the annual festival for the first time ever, offering event-goers an exclusive experience. V.I.P. Passport holders received special gift bags and explored the festival’s sixteen blocks using special transportation provided by Freebie; enjoyed access to privileged areas, including Kiwanis hospitality suite at Ball & Chain; and had the opportunity to mingle with Calle Ocho stage performers and the 2017 poster artist Alexander Mijares, on a day full of surprises and fun. Adding flavor to the festival were culinary crowd favorites Cuban Sandwich Smackdown and El Croquetazo.

More than 10 restaurants from around the region competed in the Cuban Sandwich Smackdown for a chance to win, but Sanguich de Miami took home the 2017 title of “The Best Cuban Sandwich in Miami and South Florida.” More than 30 individuals went head-to-head, eating as many croquettes as possible for bragging rights and monetary prizes ranging from $100 to $1,750, but only three prevailed. Winners in each of the categories were: Michael Rodriguez from amateur with 44 croquettes, Jose Antonio Alvarez from celebrity with 15 croquettes and Carmen Cincotti (New Jersey) from professional with 158 croquettes in eight minutes.

Closing out the day-long festival was a performance by CNCO, the Kings of Carnaval Miami 2017. The group stole the crowd’s hearts with performances of their hit song, “Quisiera” and their current single, “Reggaetón Lento.” Emerging in 2015 as the winners of Univision’s all-boy band singing competition, “La Banda,” Erick Colón (Cuba; 16), Joel Pimentel (Mexico; 18), Cristopher Vélez (Ecuador; 21), Zabdiel de Jesús (Puerto Rico; 19), and Richard Camacho (Dominican Republic; 20) are a true representation of Latinos with diverse backgrounds and ages, making them a perfect fit for this year’s crown. #CalleOcho #CocaColaCalleOcho @Carnaval_Miami @KiwanisKCLH

“Women Who Whiskey” Collingwood Whiskey Dinner &  Pairing

Women Who Whiskey Collingwood Whiskey Dinner &  PairingFriday, March 10, 7pm-11pm, Cibo Wine Bar, 200 South Pinte Drive, Miami Beach

Blended Canadian Whiskey Collingwood Whisky hosted an intimate, seated multi-course family style dinner and whiskey pairing to celebrate “Women Who Whiskey.” Hosted by Collingwood’s North American Ambassador, Alexis Green the all female-driven event is specially designed for women who enjoy whiskey to explore the various Canadian-based whiskey flavors Collingwood offers and find out what makes them unique. “Women Who Whiskey” is breaking the stereotype that whiskey is a masculine drink, and focus more on taste than gender!

Collingwood was  released in February 2011 and is the smoothest whisky ever made because it is triple distilled and slow-aged in white oak barrels from Brown-Forman cooperage in Kentucky, and finished with toasted maple-wood mellowing to remove any trace of harshness. It is crafted at Brown-Forman’s Canadian Mist Distillery in Collingwood, Ontario using fine Canadian grains and pure water from the Georgian Bay.

Collingwood blended Canadian Whiskey is a perfect base for some popular cocktails, like Collingwood Sour, Tom Collingwood, or Collingwood Mojito. Collingwood also perfectly pairs with delicious Italian food offered at the Cibo Wine Bar, including: Prosciutto & Formaggio Platter, Arancini, Fried Zucchini & Artichokes, Melanzane, Parmigiano Lobster Ravioli, Gnocchi, Pollo Mattone, Tonno Scottato, and of course Chef’s Selection Dessert Platter.
