If you want to have some fun, and satisfy your taste buds with variety of new and unknown flavors, bring friends to the Miami Culinary Food Tours. You can choose between South Beach or Little Havana tours for$59 per person (includes tax, all food and beverage). There are also several group tour options available for a slightly higher price.
The tour started in an art gallery in the Little Havana, a family filled fun, very lively neighborhood of Miami. We visited family-owned restaurants, admired the works of art local artists from Cuba, watched Master Cigar rollers hand-rolled cigars, listen to traditional Cuban music and learn about spiritual beliefs including Santeria.
After meeting and introducing ourselves, we began our walking guided tour through one of Miami’s oldest neighborhoods. We stopped in art galleries and met the artists and discussed their work and traditions in Miami as they have changed from Cuba. We ate our way through the area, stopping at El Pub for the traditional rustic Cuban cuisine. Our tastings were chicken stuffed plantains and picadillo stuffed empanadas along with Colodas – the traditional Cuban Coffee –super sweet, strong coffee as thick it is almost dessert. Next up, we visited the Cigar store. We watched Master Cigar rollers at work; they were drying leaves and rolling cigars. Educating us on the darker the cigar leaves the stronger the flavor of the cigar and the proper way to clip and light a cigar. Afterwards, we stopped at Exquisito Restaurant. Here we sampled the sandwiches. They were the classic Cuban sandwiches served with the crispy potato sticks. As we continued our walk, we checked out the Tower Theater, this was the first theater many Cubans came to and watched and learned about American Culture. We stopped at Domino Park to watch the domino games. We tasted fresh iced guarapo juice at a local institution fruteria – which is the fruit store. The juice went well with our hot out of the oven guava pastelito from a little family bakery. We went into a place that serves coffee by day and a nightclub by evening. They have local musicians play. You never know who shows to play that evening! Our last stop was the Cuban Homemade Ice Store. They have flavors such as mamey, flan, guava and cream cheese and many more.
This is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Touring an unusual neighborhood with lots of interesting galleries stores and of course, lots of fabulous food!
Our tour guide provided lots of interesting information about the culture and restaurants in the area.
After developing a loyal following as the Juice Goddess, Dr. Etti is furthering her mission of healing families through a holistic approach with the opening of Dr. Etti’s Wellness Center & Miami Martial Arts Academy in November.
Together with her fiancé, Joseph Drabkin, a veteran in the martial arts industry and master instructor (who has trained secret service and FBI agents), the two are pioneering the first wellness center of its kind that tackles the collective wellbeing of the mind, body, and soul by merging the healing powers of healthy eating and martial arts.
“The synergy of true and proper nutrition, comprehensive exercise, and the discipline of a non-quitting spirit is what makes our program unique and incredibly effective for all generations,” says Master Drabkin.
The 3,900 square-foot haven that is centrally located at 6550 Collins Ave., Miami Beach encompasses 1,800 square feet of open-mat space created for a variety of empowering classes, ranging from mixed martial arts classes for children and adults, cardio kick-boxing and Tai Chi, to Dr. Etti’s dance movement and several yoga courses.
With more than 40 years of training in martial arts and as the owner of several highly successful academies in the North East, Master Drabkin teaches each class with a level of mastery that is new to South Florida. Additionally, each course is infused with his signature teachings of discipline and integrity, which he feels is a priceless lesson for children and parents.
The remaining 2,100 square feet houses three, state-of-the-art treatment rooms, designed to conduct healing therapies like lymphatic drainage, colonics and massages. One-on-one consultations with Dr. Etti are also available for anyone looking to improve their physical and mental health through programs like her highly effective juice detoxes, custom meal planning, and food delivery services.
Most importantly, Dr. Etti’s Wellness Center & Miami Martial Arts Academy truly is a place where the entire family can come together to grow and heal, both physically and spiritually. All children are expected to maintain a B average in school (A average for black belts) and adults are held to a no-quitting commitment.
As Diego Valera rushes around his office daily, taking client phone calls, having business meetings with top executives, and writing e-mails; 60-feet away in an office surrounded by magazine articles, color templates, product images, and a team of designers, Vanessa Valera-Nolte finds herself unable to sit still. But they say they couldn’t be happier.
Most 20-something-year-olds are still trying to choose a career path; nevertheless, the Valera children are unlike others. These University of Miami alumni have not only made their choice, but are already the “it” young executives of the housewares industry.
Thanks to the continuous effort, dedication, and devotion to steer his two kids in the right direction, successful entrepreneur, Jose Luis Valera, 58, enjoys the pleasure of watching Vanessa, 28, and Diego, 27, take charge of their colorful and booming brand, Holstein Housewares.
Their two different personalities spark up the office and motivate employees to fall in love with the company. Their creation is filling in a gap in the industry for fashion-forward, high-quality and affordable products. They launched the brand in 2007 and have grown significantly since then, selling now to over 15 countries!
The combination of Vanessa and Diego has led to the foundation of a company where every other employee feels as part of the family. As an International Holstein ambassador said: “It feels good to leave home to come to our Holstein home. I just love it here.”
Their energy, enthusiasm and motivation are rarely found nowadays in young executives. Watch out for the Valeras, the family that is going to “give your kitchen the Holstein touch!”
