Solar Eclipse Celebrations in South Florida

Solar Eclipse Celebrations in South FloridaMonday, August 21, 12pm-5pm – South Florida

The eclipse will be visible – weather permitting – across all of North America. The whole continent will experience a partial eclipse lasting two to three hours. Halfway through the event, anyone within a 60 to 70 mile-wide path from Oregon to South Carolina will experience a total eclipse. During those brief moments when the moon completely blocks the sun’s bright face for 2 + minutes, day will turn into night, making visible the otherwise hidden solar corona, the sun’s outer atmosphere. Bright stars and planets will become visible as well. South Florida isn’t in the total blackout zone, but we will see about an 80 percent eclipse around 1pm EST. If your local library has run out of glasses, click here to view a list of reputable vendors that may still be selling them. Here are few places hosting Solar Eclipse observation parties:

12pm-3pm – South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association & The Fox Observatory, 16001 State Road 84, Sunrise
Come observe the Solar Eclipse with South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association & The Fox Observatory. The Eclipse will begin just before 1:30pm, and the maximum of the Eclipse will reach Partial at 2:57 pm. Since the Eclipse only lasts a couple of minutes make sure you are by 2:30pm! They will have some Solar Filter safety glasses, if you have yours please bring them! All ages are welcome! Free and open to the public.

1:25pm-4:20m – Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, 1101 Biscayne Blvd, Miami
Watch one of the most spectacular astronomical events from the museum’s Science Plaza. The expert astronomy team will be on hand to make sure you’re safely studying the sky with solar telescopes. As a courtesy to those guests who are interested in viewing the eclipse, Frost Science will make available solar eclipse viewing glasses that have been identified by the American Astronomical Society (AAS) as appropriate for viewing the eclipse. They’ll also be live-streaming the NASA Eclipse Megacast, featuring scientists and members of the public across the country as they watch and study the eclipse. Guests can also enjoy complimentary fresh, iced coffee, famous bite-sized Munchkins® and free swag courtesy of Dunkin’ Donuts in honor of this spectacular event. Complimentary glasses with museum admission only – while supplies last. Admission is $28 per person. @FrostScience

Eclipse Across America: Through the Eyes of NASA12pm-3pm – Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables
Join the Gables Cinema for a live stream of Eclipse Across America: Through the Eyes of NASA. If you’re not in the path of totality, then a dark, air-conditioned theater is the second best way to watch this year’s most anticipated celestial event. The NASA pre-show begins at noon with the main show, covering the path of totality beginning at 1:00 pm. The Cinema Cafe will be open.  Free and open to the public. @gablescinema

Peak Viewing Time: 2:57pm First 50 people on the Plaza receive a FREE pair of viewing glasses! Ensure they are certified to properly view the solar eclipse, as it is suggested not to look directly at the sun. Enjoy music and Blue Moon happy hour from Brother Jimmy’s BBQ. @cityplacewpb

1pm-5pm – EAST, Miami, 788 Brickell Plaza, 5th Floor, Miami Brickell
In partnership with Modern ŌM, EAST hotel will host a complimentary solar meditation session on its north deck (BYO yoga mat and water). The meditation session will start at 1pm and continue through the start of the eclipse until 2:30pm. Afterward, you’ll be nice and centered for the final stage of the eclipse—and possibly celebratory cocktails at East’s rooftop lounge. FREE but RSVP is suggested. @EastMiami

1pm-4pm – Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72nd Ave, South Miami
Visit the Deering Estate for a partial solar eclipse viewing as Southern Cross Astronomical Society will have professional telescopes on site. Protective glasses will be available at the main gate beginning at 1:00 pm with general admission/membership. Free with Estate admission: $12 for adults & $7 for children (ages 4-14). View the Solar Elipse from Bamboo Beach’s private beach, a hidden gem that has served as a favorite chillout spot for South Florida locals and sun goers alike. Tiki will provide a complimentary Solar Eclipse glasses for the first 100 customers. Eclipse happens at 2:57pm. Perhaps you prefer your eclipse with a cocktail. You can purchase two “Moonshine” cocktails for under $20 all day at The National Hotel during its Total Eclipse of The Sun watch party. Buy this special and get a pair of viewing glasses. Mark the occasion with a complimentary tarot and palm reading between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Free viewing glasses will be available while supplies last. @NationalMiami

1:30pm-4:20pm – Coral Castle, 28655 S Dixie Hwy, Homestead
Catch the eclipse from a mansion made mysteriously of coral rock. The historic Coral Castle will offer free solar glasses for adults and psychic readings starting just after 1 p.m. The watch party continues until 5 p.m. FREE Parking. @CoralCastle
