Key West by Nikki Beach

Sneak Peek Preview of Key West by Nikki BeachMonday, December 18, 5pm-12am – Key West By Nikki Beach, One Ocean Drive, Miami Beach

You no longer have to travel to Mile Marker 0 to enjoy the easy-breezy lifestyle of Key West. Global luxury beach club brand Nikki Beach is introducing a new restaurant to its flagship location at One Ocean Drive, in the heart of Miami Beach. The sister-restaurant to the wildly popular Key West By Nikki Beach in Dubai, which opened earlier this year, Miami’s outpost will cater to locals in the South of Fifth neighborhood. The seafood-centric concept is accented with the best of Floridian, Caribbean and Latin American flavors.

Owner Jack Penrod was raised in the Florida Keys and this venture is a love letter to the culture of the island chain, with its casual chic, chill vibe. Modeled after a rustic seaside bar, Key West by Nikki Beach elevates the ambiance with whitewashed walls, a natural color palette, sea-inspired art, cozy seating and beachy furniture.

The well-priced menu was created with the neighborhood in mind – bar bites like A1A Coconut Shrimp, Caribbean Baked Scallops with Blue Crab and Yakitori Sea Skewers start at $9, and entrees like Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Lobster Ravioli and Crispy Golden Snapper start at $24. A lively happy hour will take place daily at Key West’s “Window Bar,” which will be accessible both via the restaurant and on the breezy patio facing Ocean Drive as homage beachy Key West roadside stops. The cocktail menu will feature Florida-inspired libations like Coladas, Daiquiris and an extensive rum menu.

Keeping with the seafaring tradition of Key West’s historic fishing industry, seafood is the backbone of the cuisine. An onsite “Fish Market” will feature a fresh fish display whereby guests can select their catch. Roving oyster shuckers will roam through the dining room, assisting customers with their bivalves. Raw Bar and Sushi favorites will span Oysters with Ponzu Sauce, Octopus and Shrimp Ceviche, Grilled Tiger Prawns, Alaskan King Crab Legs, Spicy Tuna Uramaki, Beet Sake Salmon Roll and Stone Crabs (in season).

Starters such as Caribbean Baked Scallops and Blue Crab, Seafood Fritters and A1A Coconut Shrimp are sure to be crowd pleasers. Don’t miss the healthful and highly customizable Yakitori Bowl with your option of fish (Salmon, Hamachi, Tuna or Shrimp) served over coconut rice or quinoa and flavored with Citrus, Miso, Teriyaki or Hoisin sauce.

Executive Chef Frank Ferreiro’s composed entrees from the “Fish Market,” include Banana-Leaf-Wrapped Red Snapper, Stuffed Yellowtail Snapper and a signature Seafood Platter with Alaskan King Crab Legs, Grilled Calamari, Tiger Prawns, Steamed Clams and Grilled Lobster. Beyond the sea, standout dishes for carnivores span Tropical Chicken Salad, Sous Vide Short Ribs and Slow-Braised Pork Chops. Produce will be sourced from a nearby farm in Homestead, and fish and seafood will come from the local South Florida waters as much as possible.

Influenced by Key West’s most famous literary barfly Ernest Hemingway, the cocktail program puts a Key West spin on the classics, spiking the libations with citrus notes. The signature Florida Mango Colada, for example, pays homage to the original Piña Colada, but with macerated fresh coconut, pineapple and mango slices adding tropical flair. There’s also a section of the cocktail menu devoted solely to rum, with bottles from North America, the Caribbean and Latin America, including cool finds like Appleton Estate 21 Years from Jamaica, Zacapa XO Centenario from Guatemala and Papa’s Pilar 24 Years from Florida. A nightly Happy Hour in the grand tradition of Key West’s legendary sunset celebrations will feature specialty drinks and snacks.

While honoring Key West, Penrod is also sensitive to Hurricane Irma, which recently swept through and heavily damaged the Florida Keys. The restaurant will support cleanup efforts with an artistic and charitable partnership with local Key West artists, whose artwork will be sold at the restaurant. Proceeds will be donated to the Key West High School’s culinary department, which has been providing lunch to students and faculty affected by Hurricane Irma.

Key West by Nikki Beach will be open for dinner Monday through Saturday.  #KeyWestByNikkiBeach @KeyWestMiami

Sundays in the Park: A Musical Landscape

Sundays in the Park: A Musical LandscapeSunday, December 17, 2pm-4pm – Great Lawn at the Royal Palm Visitor’s Center within the Everglades National Park, 40001 State Highway 9336, Homestead

AIRIE presents a multi-sensory experience in celebration of the Everglades National Park’s 70th anniversary with “Still” a 54 minute solo for piano played by Ashlee Mack and composed by James Romig, and live, site-specific painting by Harumi Abe. Mack and Romig intend to create a “museum of sound” for the audience. Composer Romig endeavors “to create music that reflects the intricate complexity of the natural world, where fundamental structures exert influence on both small-scale iteration and large-scale design, obscuring boundaries between form and content.” Mack, who collaborated with Romig on this 60-minute piano solo, performed the world premiere of Still, at the Clyfford Still Art Museum in Denver earlier this year, and will present a new work for piano and orchestra commissioned by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony in 2018. Japanese American painter Harumi Abe will paint while the music plays on the Great Lawn at the base of the Gumbo Limbo Trail, where flora and fauna beg for interpretation. Broward-based Abe is known for her contemporary twist on traditional landscape painting, incorporating rich tones into complex themes and space. Supported in part by a Miami-Dade Tourism Development Council grant. Event is free and open to the public. Park entrance fees apply. @EvergladesNPS
